hair & Beauty

INTENT

t Beauchamps High School we endeavour to have a curriculum that is underpinned by our vision and core values and is a curriculum that is fit for all. The Hair and Beauty Academy has grown over the past few years and is now delivered from Year 9 through to Year 11. The department aims to provide a mix of learning styles providing both theory and practical sessions in hair styling, make up, nails and more. Theory studies also exist in business & entrepreneurship, cosmetic science, anatomy & physiology and design in the hair beauty sector.

IMPLEMENTATION

In Year 9 students can study a “taster” qualification that introduces them to hair and beauty theory and practical elements. This course is for one hour per week and covers customer service, nail services, hairdressing techniques, basic facial treatments, health and safety in hair and beauty and careers in hair and beauty.

In Years 10 and 11, Hair and Beauty is taken as an option. The qualification the students are working towards is VTCT Level 1 / 2 Technical Award in Hair and Beauty. During the course, students will study anatomy and physiology of the human body and also take part in practical sessions learning things such as eye, nail and facial treatments as well as blow drying, and hair styling. Students have access to a real working salon and start to understand the business aspects relating to the sector. Students carry out one piece of coursework that is research based and are then required to sit a final exam.  Students get the opportunity to visit a large industry trade exhibition and local salons and are supported by colleges and local professionals who help with further career development and work placements where possible. Throughout the course a blended learning approach is used, using Teams, this allows students to access their work from any location, be that school or home and for the teacher to see updates and provide feedback in real time

IMPACT

We endeavour to embed career development into the curriculum beyond the classroom, promoting responsibility and independence. Students are supported in writing CVs to give to local salons for work experience. As such some of the students taking the course have gone onto working full time in salons and barbers and some have even setup their own businesses in this field. Many of our Yr 11 students have gone on to apply for hair and beauty college placements and apprenticeships, with many of these also securing a part time paid job in the local area. We have recently partnered with Debut Academy and Jet Hairdressing Academy, two local training centres that specialise in finding apprenticeship roles for students wishing to further their career. They also run workshops and virtual open events that all students can take part in
