PHYSICAL EDUCATION

INTENT

KS3 Core PE Intent

As a department we act as a family and inspire our KS3 students to work hard at what they believe in and achieve their best.

We prepare our students by providing opportunities for them to develop their skills and tactical awareness, alongside improving their knowledge and understanding of the sports covered in our curriculum.

By the end of their KS3 Beauchamps PE journey, we aim to have enthused and encouraged students to participate in a range of sports and equipped them with the basic skills and knowledge required to do so.

KS4 Core PE Intent

As a department we act as a family and encourage our KS4 students to undertake an active, healthy lifestyle and develop their use of skills and tactics in more complex game situations. Students will also begin to look at other leadership roles in sport such as officiating, captaincy and coaching in their lessons.

By the end of their KS4 Beauchamps PE journey, we aim to have equipped our students with the skills and knowledge to continue with physical activity in their adult life independently.

Curriculum Overview

The Beauchamps PE department is a thriving department who are actively involved in providing examined and non-examined experiences for our students, we aim to provide a positive and worthwhile learning experience for all. We compete favourably in a wide range of sports at local district, county, and regional level.

Physical Education at Beauchamps High School is a compulsory subject for all students from year’s seven to eleven. Physical Education is a valued subject and has many cross-curricular links. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum for all our students in PE, offering a wide variety of team and individual sports to take part in. We provide a wide range of extra-curricular clubs both at social and a competitive level. Our extra-curricular provision is free and non-selective offering all students the opportunity to participate. Where necessary we provide additional squad sessions and use club links to challenge and stretch our students.

Aims linked to the curriculum

The vision and aims of the PE department have been shaped by the requirements of the P.E. National Curriculum (DfES 2013), teaching students the skills to overcome and outwit opponents in individual and team sports. Along with the specifications set out by Sports Leaders UK Level1/2 for Key Stage 3, OCR Cambridge National qualifications (Sport Studies & Science) at Key Stage 4 and the Pearson BTEC Level 3 in Sport qualification at Key Stage 5.

IMPLEMENTATION

Key Stage 3 Curriculum Pathway

Core PE years 7,8,9

Students are encouraged to work on the quality of their practical performance through the development of core and advanced skills in isolation then progressing these skills into a competitive game situation.  Students are encouraged to demonstrate these skills with consistency, accuracy and control, while applying appropriate strategies and tactics in a game environment.

Students will be stretched and challenged regardless of their ability and will be introduced to competitive situations. Students will also focus on the core elements of health, well-being, and leadership with a focus to prepare students to become more active in adult life.

The following sporting activities are offered across the curriculum at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4;

Football, Rugby, Basketball, Netball, Dance, Table Tennis, Badminton, Outdoor Adventurous Activitites (OAA), Trampolining, Cross Country, Athletics, Rounders, Cricket, Softball, Fitness, Invasion Games and Health Related Fitness (HRF).

In our Games and Performance lessons, students are encouraged to work on the quality of their practical performance through the development of core and advanced skills in isolation in their lessons. Teachers will do this by teaching the students the basic techniques and allowing them time to practise and develop their skills. By the end of the lesson, students will be given the opportunity to then progress and use these skills in a competitive game situation. Students are encouraged to demonstrate these skills with consistency, accuracy and control in lessons.
The main focus of all lessons will be to get all students active, engaged and competent in the core skills across a range of sports.
Once students have mastered the core skills of each sport, they will practise these in game environments for large parts of the lesson and develop the application of appropriate strategies and tactics.

In our Health & Fitness Lessons (Cross Country, OAA, HRF) our students are encouraged to work hard, achieve their best and be proud of their results. We will educate students on the various health benefits of physical activity and its importance in contributing to a healthy active lifestyle. Teachers will look to motivate students and enhance their fitness by setting differentiated targets so students have something to aspire to during lessons. Any performance data such as times or repetitions is recorded and tracked so students and teachers can see student progress clearly. In these lessons we encourage students to take their health and wellbeing into their own hands and advise students on ways they can be physically active in their own time.

We also offer students the opportunity to study the following qualification in Year 9:

Student Testimonials

Sophie J

2016 – 2020

My journey at Beauchamps started in 2016 and I have not yet finished it. Since starting Beauchamps, I have enjoyed many opportunities and experiences that the PE department has given me. The staff have encouraged and supported me in all my endeavours in sport as well as furthering my skills to be a better player through many extracurricular activities. During my time at Beauchamps, I have had many experiences such as being part of the winning district cross country team, winning district swimming races and setting district records, travelling to France to play in a netball tournament where we won. These experiences have meant that my time at Beauchamps made me love sport with a friendly and encouraging atmosphere during all sports and helped me broaden the sports I take part in. My time in Beauchamps has been academically and physically successful which has helped me pushed further on with my future career and brought me to the next part of my journey.

When studying the National Certificate Sport Studies at Beauchamps it helped open many opportunities within the sporting community and helped expand the friendships I have within that community. The staff have been excellent at pushing me to achieve my best in all units and have helped me make the best decision for my further studies into PE at Beauchamps. The course has given me the opportunity to gain new skills within sport such as leading and teaching sessions which will help me when I enter further education in PE. The course has allowed me to grow in confidence and challenge myself at every chance I had on the course. I would like to thank the PE department for allowing me to have the best experiences while studying sport and helping me decide on the best option for me to study sport in sixth form which will help shape me towards my future.

Kenny C

2015-2019

When at Beauchamps High School the PE department were pivotal in my football development as they always supported me in my goals and aspirations of becoming a professional footballer. School football provided me with county and national platforms to participate in and I was lucky enough to win numerous county titles in both futsal and football with the school. These experiences have shaped me as a player and made me even hungrier for further success.

As I got older Mr Byford my PE teacher always looked to challenge me further and selected me to represent Essex FA in Year 8. I went onto represent my county for over 3 years and play with likeminded players who were already in the academy setup. When my profile started to develop at my local club Billericay and at Essex FA Mr Byford once again put me forward to Southend Academy representatives where I went on to sign as a scholar and make my first team debut in 2020. I have since taken my next steps in my career and joined Norwich City where I continue to chase my dreams of becoming a professional footballer.

Despite how far I have come in such a short period of time, I will always remember my roots and how important PE at Beauchamps was in my development. I owe a lot to the Gifted PE programme set up at the school as this pushed me to participate in a wide variety of sports and I went onto achieve full colours participating in sports such as athletics, basketball, cricket and futsal to name just a few. These sports have given me a solid foundation of skills to work from and I still use them to this day.

2015-2022

Being at Beauchamps for the last 7 years has given me many different opportunities – particularly in sport. These experiences have developed me as a person and has given me the skills to progress within all the sports I participate in. In 2019, I and the netball team went to Disneyland Paris to compete in a competition. The memories that I have made on trips like these, and the competitions I have competed in for the school, can’t be matched. As a competitive swimmer (training x7 a week and waking up at 4:30am!), the encouragement and support from the PE department has been incredible.

While I was studying GCSE PE and BTEC Level 3 Sport, I was pushed by my teachers to work hard – which has lead me to maintain high grades whilst doing all the extracurricular activities and swim training that I do. The teachers have been incredible, and they cater for everyone’s needs – delivering theory and practical lessons in creative ways.  The course and the teachers have inspired me to continue with my sports studies at University, and hopefully going into a career in sports too.

2012-2017

When studying GCSE Physical Education at Beauchamps High School it really opened me up to different opportunities within the sporting community. The staff were excellent when teaching and catering to everyone’s needs, as they were able to help me whilst I was there and still are helping me now as I’m leaving for University. The school has played a major role in securing me a scholarship in West Virginia, America at Davis & Elkins College, where I will be playing football and studying Kinesiology & Exercise Science. The course itself helped me grow in confidence and challenge myself in all aspects of sport. I would like to thank all the PE staff for allowing me to have the best experience studying sport and shaping me towards my future.

2012-2017

My journey started at Beauchamp’s where I attended from 2012 to 2017, throughout my time here I enjoyed the opportunities and experiences that the P.E department gave me. The support from the staff in pushing us in our extra curriculum activities, developed me as a player as well as give me the tools for my future career. Experiences such as winning district cup finals and travelling up to the copper box for futsal tournaments, were cherished memories and stepping stones in my development. Overall my time at Beauchamp’s was successful both academically and, on the pitch, this put me in a position to push on with my career, which took me to my next Stage of my journey.
