Young Carers

Young Carers at Beauchamps High School

At Beauchamps High School, we recognise that some of our students take on important responsibilities at home. While this can be something to feel proud of, it can also be challenging at times. We are committed to supporting our Young Carers and ensuring they feel understood, valued and supported throughout their time at school.

Who are Young Carers?

A Young Carer is a child or young person under the age of 18 who helps care for someone at home. This could be a parent, sibling, or other family member who may have:

  • A physical disability
  • A long-term illness
  • Mental health needs
  • Substance misuse issues

Young Carers may take on additional responsibilities such as:

  • Helping with cooking, cleaning or household tasks
  • Supporting with medication or appointments
  • Assisting someone to move around safely
  • Providing emotional support to family members

For some, this support can take up a significant amount of time and energy alongside school life.

How we support Young Carers

We have a dedicated Young Carers provision at Beauchamps High School to ensure students feel supported both academically and emotionally.

Students who are identified as Young Carers are offered opportunities to:

  • Meet regularly in a safe, relaxed environment
  • Spend time with other students in similar situations
  • Talk, unwind, and take part in activities
  • Catch up on schoolwork or homework if needed

Our aim is to provide a space where students can feel less alone and more able to balance school with their responsibilities at home.

Additional support

We also work alongside external organisations and local services to provide further support where needed. This may include:

  • One-to-one support
  • Group sessions
  • Advice and guidance for families
  • Access to activities and short breaks

We can also help families connect with specialist Young Carers services through the local authority.

Getting help

If you think you might be a Young Carer or you are concerned about someone else, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

You can speak to Miss Langston (Young Carer Lead) who is situated in the iMatter building or any member of staff in school, who will be happy to listen and help you access the support available.
